Helastel celebrated success last month, winning The Hardware Award at the SPARKies 2021 for our work with Digital Interlock Software (DIS).
Organised by TechSpark, the annual awards showcase and celebrate the organisations, projects and individuals leading and inspiring the tech and digital sector in the South West. With 17 awards categories spanning everything from Best Use of VR to Best Mentor, the SPARKies are some of the most hotly-anticipated awards in the growing UK tech region.
Winning The Hardware Award was a huge achievement for the Helastel team and an endorsement of our ability to solve problems and push new digital frontiers for our partners and their clients across the many varied sectors we work in.

In the case of our award-winning partnership, we helped DIS inject a fresh new revenue stream into the bar and restaurant industry at a pivotal point in the sector’s recovery from lockdowns, making their connected beer pumps a reality.
Conceptualised by DIS and delivered with our technical expertise, the technology enables brand owners and pub landlords to create and distribute HD visual content to overlooked but prime real-estate: their own beer pumps. The product comprises a connected OLED display powered by Raspberry PI single board computers, and is remotely operated via a sophisticated custom-built CMS. As a result, traditional beer pumps can be retrofitted with the hardware to host real-time, targeted visual messaging in the customer’s eyeline.
But the potential of the underlying technology isn’t limited to the bar and restaurant sector – with practical applications in any retail environment. You can read more about the project here.
“I truly believe that the possibilities for this technology are endless”
“It means a lot being recognised for this award,” said Edward Almond, software engineer at Helastel and heavily involved in the project the beginning. “We thought this was a great idea and that it could really build momentum – that’s now been validated by influential members of the UK tech industry.”
“In addition, the actual delivery of the project has been a huge success. I truly believe that the possibilities for this technology are endless – for DIS and for applications within other sectors. We have already expanded on the range of products we can offer and really our only limitations will be our imaginations.”
Helastel was up against very worthy competition in The Hardware Award category. Fellow shortlisters included Smartbox, (assistive technology helping disabled people to communicate and be independent) Marble (cutting-edge hardware & software to protect maritime environments) and GroundWaves (haptic sneakers that enables wearers to ‘feel’ music at live events).
Helastel was also shortlisted for Best Place to Work in Tech, while our newly-launched no code application development platform Intelastel was in the running for the Data, Data, Data Award.
A drive to innovate underpins every project we take on at Helastel. Our goal is always to create amazing solutions for our partners that shatter expectations. That said, it’s a great feeling when our efforts are recognised in the wider tech community as well.
