DevOps Team Leader

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in developing and managing Helastel customer IT infrastructure estate, which is essential for the delivery of all of Helastel’s services.  You will be working with 100’s of servers, modernising all aspects of our infrastructure, from CI/CD pipelines to Kubernetes clusters.

You will be a key member of the Engineering team, providing prompt and reliable technical support and DevOps services to Helastel clients and staff. You will be responsible for maintaining Helastel’s infrastructure, including servers, software, networking equipment and firewalls, and ensuring they are robust, scalable and fit the company’s needs.

Your responsibilities as a team leader include decision-making, reporting, coaching, mentoring, developing team skills and managing conflict. You will play an important role in developing and coaching team members by leading regular and open communication and providing constructive feedback; you will be key in identifying team goals and assessing progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • To design a scalable and modern infrastructure estate, supporting and communicating with our customers, engineer and test community at Helastel, ensuring its’ continued smooth running and resilience 
  • Help maximise efficiency of the engineering and test community by ensuring availability of necessary processes and environments
  • Ensure compliance on all IT systems with relevant accreditations (e.g. ISO 9001/27001, etc)
  • Lead DevOps projects, including the design and deployment of new IT systems and services pertaining to Helastel customer infrastructure
  • Monitor performance of all systems to determine cost and productivity levels, and to make recommendations for improving the IT infrastructure
  • Help define DevOps strategy, architecture, and processes for Helastel customer and development infrastructure
  • Analyse business requirements by partnering with key stakeholders across the organization to develop solutions for IT needs
  • Assess vendors and develop test strategies for new hardware and software
  • Ensure transparency and clarity by providing technical explanations in plain language 
  • Support the Service Team to identify and add potential resolutions to the scripted FAQ’s
  • Be responsible for the cataloging of all server hardware, software and credentials
  • Manage all hardware and software infrastructure across Helastel estate
  • Support the Compliance Lead with meeting and maintaining technical compliance standards, including ISO27001, Cyber Essentials Plus and DPS Toolkit 
  • Report on capacity levels and the state of infrastructure; escalate to the Head of Engineering 
  • Monitor infrastructure health to ensure systems are healthy through monitoring and alerting systems 
  • Provide emergency cover as part of an agreed rota
  • Responsible for the performance and output within your team, and for escalating issues or concerns to the Head of Engineering where required
  • Set clear goals and objectives to maintain and improve upon quality standards for your team and keep these under regular review with each team member


  • Extensive experience in DevOps on Microsoft Azure platforms
  • Demonstrable experience in DevOps on *NIX platforms and with VMWare infrastructure
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a customer-facing role, able to explain complex technical concepts
  • Demonstrable programming experience (i.e: scripting for server management tasks)
  • Confident working with both Linux and Microsoft operating systems
  • Experience of reporting KPI’s at board level
  • Knowledge of, and familiarity with, ISO 27001 and other similar compliance standards 

Salary range

  • £45,000 – £55,000
