Being a software developer at Helastel

25/07/2012

I’m sure that many other software developers will agree with me when I say that financial reward is often only a secondary factor when it comes to seeking employment. Of course, getting paid what you’re worth (and being able to pay the bills!) is important, but for many, the chance to work on interesting, challenging problems is a reward in itself. If you don’t believe me, just look at the phenomenal amounts of effort put into open-source projects. How many other industries are there where industry professionals volunteer their own free time to do the same thing they spend all day doing at work?

Variety is the spice of life

How many places are there where one day, you can be developing an iOS app, the next day, you’re rebuilding an e-commerce website that takes thousands of orders a day, and the day after that you’re debugging FTP traffic at the TCP/IP level to work out why a client’s embedded system is failing to connect to an FTP server?

Do you care where you hang out for 8 hours every day of the week?

Working environment is also a pretty big factor. I know that many developers, myself included, have a certain independence of mind, and its amazing how much difference little things like being allowed to wear jeans to the office, or the option to work 9.30 to 6 instead of 9 to 5.30 can make. Being in central Bristol is a bonus too.

All work and no play makes Helastel a dull place

How about the company arranging social events to suit developers? Let’s be honest, I’m sure many developers aren’t too keen on networking events in expensive wine bars, so how about an all night LAN party?

Micro management nightmares?

The approach taken by management is also a make-or-break factor for many. After all, when you’re a highly skilled professional, it’s nice to be treated as such and not subjected to micro-management! The chance to choose the tools you want to use, and to work in the way that suits you best, is for many a seemingly impossible dream.

Impossible? Maybe not. What if I told you there was a software development business in Bristol that offered all of this, and more. Yes, you can dress casually to come to work. Yes, provided your work gets done, you’re pretty much free to work when and how you like (ok, within reason). Yes, you’ll even get some time during work hours to work on your own personal projects! Oh, and I know I mentioned at the start that money probably isn’t a major motivator, but the pay’s good too.

“Well then”, you say, “where is this awesome company where everyone wants to work?” Actually, you probably don’t say that. You’re a smart and talented IT professional, so you’ve already realised I’m talking about Helastel. You might have even noticed that we’re recruiting developers right now! So, if this sounds like the kind of place you’d like to work, get in touch with us now.
